Intercultural Development Inventory

The ‘Intercultural Development Inventory’ ™ (IDI) is a statistically reliable, cross-culturally valid measure of an individual or group’s intercultural competence adapted from the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity-DMIS (developed by Dr.Bennet and Dr.Hammar- Ph.Ds.and Research Laureates).

IDI has been successfully used since 1998 in corporate, government, academic, and other settings to aid individual and group coaching and action-planning, to guide multicultural team development, to generate needs analyses for targeted training, to conduct program evaluation, for organizational development, to promote diversity programs,  to prepare entering a new culture and research efforts.

The IDI is a 50-item, theory-based instrument that can be taken either in paper and pencil form or online. The IDI can be used in multiple languages (Bahasa Indonesian, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian). Translations from the English-language version were completed using rigorous "back translation" scientific protocols to ensure both linguistic and conceptual equivalency. The instrument is easy to complete and it can generate an in-depth graphic profile of an individual's or groups' predominant level of intercultural competence along with a detailed textual interpretation of that level of intercultural development and associated transitional issues.
